William Shadish Memorial Page
William Raymond Shadish, Jr. died at his home in Mariposa, California on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016 of complications of prostate cancer, which he fought valiantly for many years.
Will was born on November 3, 1949 in Brooklyn, New York, to William Raymond Shadish Sr. and Maryjane Cartmell. His father, spent 30 months as a prisoner of war in North Korea when Will was a baby.
Will received his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Santa Clara University in 1972, and his M.S. (1975) and Ph.D. (1978) degrees from Purdue University in clinical psychology, with minors in statistics and measurement. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in methodology and program evaluation at Northwestern University. After many years spent at the University of Memphis, Will joined UC Merced in 2003, before there were any students or buildings, to help build a new research university He designed the psychology major, which is the second largest on campus and led the work that resulted in Merced’s second Ph.D. program — Psychological Sciences, which is now home to some 40 students.
Will was Distinguished Professor at UC Merced and earning the Academic Senate Distinguished Research Award in 2011. In addition to meta-analysis his main research contributions were in program evaluation, psychology of science and experimental design. He was the founding Secretary-Treasurer of this society, served as President of this society, the Society for Multivariate Experimental Psychology and the American Evaluation Association. He received awards from the American Evaluation Association, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the Policy Studies Organization, the Campbell Collaboration and this society. He was a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, Associate Editor of American Psychologist, past Associate Editor of Multivariate Behavioral Research, and past editor of New Directions for Evaluation. His work has been cited more than 22,500 times.
He is survived by his mother, Maryjane Cartmell of Redding California, his wife, Cynthia AD Shadish, a brother and two sisters: seven nieces and nephews his stepmother, Karen Shadish, and three step-siblings.

Will Shadish Fund
The University of California, Merced has established a fund in memory of Will Shadish. Will was known for his commitment both to scholarship and to teaching. The fund will endow one or more annual fellowships to recognize graduate students who similarly excel in both areas. Information about the fund can be found here.
