About the Society for Research Synthesis Methodology (SRSM)
The Society for Research Synthesis Methodology (SRSM) is a cross disciplinary society that supports and promotes the development and use of innovative and robust methods of research synthesis. Please read our aims and objectives here.
The Society strives to create a culture of excellence, openness, and inclusion. We value high-quality work and would like to invite members from diverse disciplinary and professional backgrounds.
Types of Membership of the SRSM
There are four kinds of membership in the Society: Regular, Emeritus, Student, and Fellow. There is no limit on the number of members in each category. A description of the four categories of membership can be found here.
We are accepting new member applications on an ongoing basis.
Applications for Regular Membership
Applications for Regular membership in SRSM should have an interest in developing and/or applying innovative, cutting edge research synthesis methodology (rather than only applying standard existing approaches) and professional experience in research synthesis, as evidenced by one or more of the following:
(1) Currently or previously organized and responsible for delivery of a graduate-level course on any aspect of research synthesis methodology.
(2) Completed PhD-level training (i) with a dissertation/thesis that focuses on research synthesis methodology, or (ii) in a program that is specifically designed to teach research synthesis methodology.
(3) Published at least 1 peer-reviewed publication on methodology for research synthesis as first author, or at least 3 as a co-author.
(4) Published at least 3 high quality* peer-reviewed systematic reviews, or other forms of research synthesis, as first author.
(5) Published at least 3 high quality* peer-reviewed systematic reviews, or other forms of research synthesis, as a co-author, in which the applicant was considered THE methodological expert on a particular aspect, providing the main support and oversight for this aspect. For example, this may include (but is not limited to) information specialists, lead statisticians, or computer scientists. People who are involved in completing tasks such as screening articles and extracting data are generally not considered as providing a leading methodological role.
(*) For example, we would generally expect high quality systematic reviews to follow established guidelines.
Research synthesis occurs across a wide variety of disciplines and contexts, and we recognize that the above criteria might inappropriately exclude some researchers. If an individual who does not fulfill any of the above criteria would like to become a member of SRSM, they may apply for membership with a written explanation as to why they think they should be a member.
Potential new Regular members are asked to apply via an online form and to attach an abbreviated (maximum 2 pages) Curriculum Vitae.
Applications for Student Membership
Students in a full or part-time graduate degree program (Masters, PhD, MD or equivalent) can be nominated for Student membership by a current Regular or Emeritus Member or Fellow of the Society. The member making the nomination should consider the student to have potential to fulfill the criteria for Regular membership by the end of their program.
Note that progression to Regular membership will not be automatic following completion of the degree program; student members will be asked to re-apply, demonstrating that they meet the criteria at that point.
Students should be nominated by a current member (Regular, Emeritus or Fellow), with a single letter of recommendation and a short (maximum 2 pages) Curriculum Vitae.
Nominations for student memberships should be made by e-mail to [email protected].
Applications for Fellows
Fellows of the SRSM are long-standing members who have made exceptional contributions to the field and to the Society. This is an honorary title and comes with no additional privileges or duties.
A Society Fellow must demonstrate that they meet ALL of the following criteria:
1)Have a sustained record (at least 10 years) of scholarly outputs and/or educational leadership in research synthesis.
2)Is a current Regular or Emeritus Member of the Society, and has been a Member for at least 5 of the past 10 years
3)Has presented (or was the senior, supervising author of presented work) at a minimum of three of the Society’s Annual Meetings
4)Has made significant contributions to the Society, as demonstrated by serving in any of the following capacities, over a total time period (not necessarily consecutive) of at least 3 years:
(i)as a Trustee
(ii) Associate Editor or Editor in Chief of Research Synthesis Methods
(iii)participation in a formal Society committee such as the Diversity Committee or Membership Committee
We invite Regular or Emeritus Members of the Society who meet the above criteria to apply for Fellowship. Please apply using the simple online form to provide evidence of meeting all 4 of the criteria.
Note that receiving the Olkin Address is considered sufficient (but not necessary) evidence of meeting criterion #1. All other applicants are requested to attach an abbreviated (maximum 2 pages) Curriculum Vitae or a list of relevant publications to evidence this criterion. You may optionally also choose to attach a letter of nomination from a current Regular Member, Emeritus Member or Fellow of the Society.
