We invite members of SRSM to contribute blog posts for our website.
A blog post could be a short introduction of your group, research, upcoming and past events, etc.
A short reflection on the 2016 Annual Meeting would be especially welcome.
If willing to contribute, please contact srsm[.]asst [at] gmail [.] com

Annual Meeting 2015 - Nashville

8/12/2015

Thanks to all for a great meeting in Nashville last week. Upon reflection, a real milestone. It was our 10th meeting, gratifying as an index that SRSM seems to be a success. We had 43 active members attend, by far the largest number of active members at any of the meetings we have had; and a number of guests and students registered as well. A number of us played the game of "how would you rate the conference on a scale of 1-5", and the answer was always between 4-5. There is always room for improvement, but let's pat ourselves on the back for just a moment.

And here is a history trivia question for us--who has attended all ten SRSM conferences? Kudos to Michael Borenstein in that regards. Is there anyone else? Michael has taken pictures and videos of most (all?) of the conferences from Cambridge to now, and you can see many of them on the SRSM website. So a personal thanks to Michael for this service (and so many other services) to SRSM.

The 2015 SRSM annual meeting in Nashville, Tennessee was held on the beautiful campus of Vanderbilt University, hosted by Mark Lipsey and his colleagues at the Peabody Research Institute. We enjoyed a sumptuous banquet on the scenic Nashville Riverfront and a very fun trip to the Country Music Hall of Fame (a very American experience for our non-U.S. members and guests, and a pleasantly engaging surprise even for the non-country-music fans among us). The meeting was a stimulating and well-balanced mix of topics, ranging from social science problems and challenges in medical research synthesis to serious statistics. The Ingram Olkin Award was made to Julia Littell, and Ingram Olkin was on hand to congratulate her, to everyone’s delight. Our new President-Elect is Kay Dickersin, a past Ingram Olkin Award winner. Chris Schmid organized a challenging discussion session that compared meta-analysis and research synthesis in medicine, social sciences and ecology. Will Shadish, Tom Trikalinos and Hannah Rothstein led a spirited discussion on the future of SRSM, replete with yellow sticky notes all over the front of the room. All in all, it was a stimulating, collegial and very fun meeting.

SRSM Website

I am delighted to welcome you to the new SRSM website, which will become central to Society operations. Not only does the site look great, it should enhance communication and ease administration. Members will be able to find Society documents and forms on-line and pay membership dues (and next year, meeting registration fees) through the site. I hope that it will also become a focal point that members (and non-members) will visit often and use to share ideas and advance the science of synthesis.

SRSM is a cross disciplinary society that promotes and supports the development and use of innovative and robust methods of evidence synthesis. We do this by providing opportunities to share, discuss and receive feedback on theoretical and practical methodological advances across disciplines and research areas. Our new website can play an important role in this, serving as our frontline means of communication.

As the Society heads for its 10th birthday we have been discussing and debating the future form and role of SRSM and how we can ensure that we maintain a vibrant culture that both celebrates past achievements and encourages the development of an upcoming generation of new researchers. The world around us is changing at a rapid pace: more areas are embracing evidence informed policy; technological advancement is enabling implementation of sophisticated methods; the world of ‘big data’ is synthesizing diverse data for a vast range of purposes but largely running in parallel to SRSM members’ spheres of activity; and open science and data sharing are becoming a new norm. This is certainly an exciting time to be involved in research synthesis.

I am looking forward to an exciting meeting in Nashville (8-10th July) and hope that many SRSM members will be able to join us for what promises to be 3 days of excellent presentation, discussion and debate addressing some of the above issues. As ever, it will be an opportunity to get together with colleagues from across the globe in an informal setting to learn from each other and make connections (methodological and social!). A lively programme of events and entertainment is planned – more details will follow here on our new website.

Finally my thanks especially to David Waring of Stony Brook University, and also to Shinichi Nakagawa, Jessica Gurevitch, Will Shadish and for feedback and ideas from all of the Trustees  for all their hard work and creativity in developing the new website, which should prove to be of great benefit to the Society and its members.

See you in Nashville ….

Lesley Stewart, President, SRSM
